Hoosier Monthly Newsletter - November 2007
Well it is that time of year we have all been waiting for ! ! !   DEER SEASON ! ! !
It is now the 1st of November and the pre rut has begun.

The Hoosier Outdoorsman Pro Staff is hitting the woods working on our upcoming support
DVD for G&S Custom Calls. We have included a moon phase graph to help identify the better
and peak times to hunt or fish.

One thing to keep in mind is scent control. I don`t know how many times I have heard and
even said myself about how back in the day they didn`t have scent control and still took deer.
Well there is some truth to that  but a few of things never mentioned are the fact that hunting
pressure is most likely over 100% more than back in the day, plus all the hunters I grew up
with that were old timers were primarily gun hunters and only went during shotgun season,
which is always in November and usually is pretty cold.

The cold plays a big role in scent control as the thermals get lower and odors basically
become near non existent, so with weather being like it is now scent control is probably the
biggest concern outside of placing your stand where the deer actually come through. The
open market has a barrage of scent control products that will all boast TOTAL scent
elimination. Now I don`t feel that human scent can ever be TOTALLY eliminated, but it can be
controlled with a proper routine and proper products.

One of the biggies out there today is Scent Lok suits. Yes they may work very well at first, but
there have been a few scientists that put pure basic facts to the fiction of these suits or
clothing. First, carbon is a great scent eliminator and works very well at first but the carbon
fibers in the clothing work by attracting the odor and neutralizing it turning into odorless
molecules. But ( heres the biggy ) carbon will not clean itself and washing will not clean the
carbon fibers either, some companies say that with washing and then putting through the
dryer that the heat from the dryer will re-activate the carbon?? Scientists have published
several articles strictly on this subject and a simple google search will produce quite a bit of
reading material, but for carbon to be RE-Activated to cleans it will need to be heated
to over 600 degrees F, now this in itself will turn the carbon and the fabric to ashes.

So if you think spending the big amounts of money for a carbon suit is worth it???? Thats
up to you..  There are some new clothing makers out there that have found a way to
take a form of Silver and turn it into a thread and weave it into the fabric and yield the
same results as carbon but will allow the availability to wash the collected odors out
of the garment for repeated odor protection. Arctic Shield has a new line called X
Scent and after testing in laboratories and in the field it has proven to be everything it
says it is. As far as scent elimination sprays goes????  Most sprays out their are
pretty much alike, most contain a mixture of distilled water, hydrogen peroxide and
baking soda and a scent free soap to make it cling to surfaces when sprayed. These
work well if the clothing and the hunter are both prepared properly before use. To
many people think these are magic sprays and can just wear any old clothes and
spray this on and become invisible. This would be a revolution to the hunting industry
if that were true, but it is not, bathing with a scent free soap and washing clothes in a
good scent free and or odor eliminating detergent will make for a good base before
adding your favorite sprays. Over the years I have tried each and every spray on the
market, Scent A Way, Scent Killer, Eliminex, Carbon Blast, etc.  All worked well with
proper preparation of the body and clothing before hand. 1 product I have become
completely confident with is Xtreme Scents Silver XP, this spray is made with
Colloidal Silver and offers the exact same odor eliminating abilities as the X Scent
garments.

Personally? After researching all the products out there for scent control I have came to the
conclusion that this new realm of Silver aided scent control will be a milestone for hunters. I
have also found that after properly washing and drying your hunting clothes hang them on a
hanger and spray each garment with the Silver XP and allow to dry then place in a scent free
plastic bag to store till the hunt. This will allow the Silver induced scent elimination to soak
into the fabric pretty much giving you a scent retardant suit ! !  Just a few small sprays before
entering the woods and you are good to go, you can get Xtreme Scents Silver XP laundry
detergent which contains the same Colloidal Silver concentrate as their spray to further
enhance the silver scent control properties of your clothing. This product is probably one of
the safest and most effective ones on the market today, its chemical composition will
keep it from going "flat" and loosing any of its scent control abilities.  I have made my
own scent free laundry detergent at home that works pretty well, I just mix 1 gallon of
tide scent and dye free laundry detergent with 1 bottle of either the Silver XP spray or
1 bottle of Hunters Specialties Scent A Way spray with fresh acorn scent and VIOLA,
the tide will help tone down the acorn smell so that it is not as potent as straight out of
the bottle and that will add an extra component to your scent free practices. Well as I
always say do your research and use your head not your wallet ! !  DO a google
search on everything here and see what you come up with for yourself. Then
incorporate this into your own practices and enjoy the great outdoors.
